"Townsend is a very athletic and explosive player, capable of making game changing plays from any spot on the field. We like his size and athleticism for the outside linebacker position at the major level of competition. Also plays running back; is very productive demonstrating a strong finishing style. This is a flexible player with very good balance and playing speed; can K&D quickly with great instincts. From an off position he moves around a lot; shows great timing when run blitzing; beats blockers through gaps with quickness and balance. Has a great burst to the QB or ball carrier resulting in many negative yardage plays. Flashes downhill ability vs. the inside run; his quick hands and playing strength are an asset. Works through traffic well with excellent long pursuit habits. Demonstrates good depth in underneath coverage; eyes on the QB along with good plant and drive to the ball; has good ball catching skills. We see a player who's athletic skills will allow him to be placed in a variety of positions on defense; his run and pass blitz potential are unlimited; displays great timing, gets into the L.O.S just as the ball is snapped, creating havoc in the backfield; is always around the ball either causing fumbles or scooping the ball for momentum changing plays. Can pressure the pocket with speed off the edge or use his quick hands and change of direction moves to get inside to the QB; shows consistent wrap tackling skill with one arm potential. If not an immediate starter, Townsend could see early playing time with the distinct possibility of contributing on special teams as he polishes his overall skills."
